Questions to ask a robotics or industrial automation software partner

Robotics and industrial automation programs fail less often on a clever demo and more often on integration, safety boundaries, versioning, and the gap between a lab prototype and a maintainable system.

This FAQ is for engineering and R&D leaders evaluating a software partner for robotics, lab automation, or industrial AI. For the cross-industry baseline on data use, processing locations, encryption, incident response, SLAs, deletion, and pre-contract audits, use our AI and software partner due diligence guide.

Areusdev is an engineering partner for AI, control software, integrations, and R&D delivery. We are not a turnkey robot OEM unless that is explicitly out of scope for software-only work.

Robotics software partner FAQ

Do you build robot hardware or the software around it?

We focus on software and systems engineering: control and coordination software, AI perception or decision support where justified, operator tools, integrations, and evidence for validation. Mechanical design, actuators, and OEM hardware typically sit with specialized partners. Scope that boundary early so ownership and liability stay clear.

Will proprietary plant, lab, or research data train your shared models?

No, not without explicit written consent for a named purpose. Operational and research data stay in your tenancy or agreed private environment. Third-party model APIs, if used, are named as subprocessors and configured to keep your data out of vendor training by default.

How do you handle real-time control, edge deployment, and cloud AI together?

Many programs need a split: deterministic or low-latency control near the machine, and heavier analytics or model services in private cloud or on-prem where policy allows. We map that architecture per project, including failure modes when connectivity drops. Cloud AI is not assumed for every control loop.

What about functional safety and human override?

Safety cases, SIL/PL claims, and certified safety controllers belong to the product owner and qualified safety partners. On the software side we design for clear operator override, mode management, logging, and separation between advisory AI and safety-critical paths unless you commission a regulated product path with the right clearances and specialists.

Can you integrate with existing PLCs, robots, MES, or LIMS?

Yes, when interfaces and access are available. We treat integration as first-class work: protocols, adapters, data provenance, and test harnesses. Rip-and-replace of a working cell or lab stack is not the default.

How do you version models, firmware interfaces, and releases so we can reproduce behavior?

Automation and research need pins. We version application code, model artifacts, configuration, and pipeline definitions so you can reproduce runs and audit what changed between releases. Material model or prompt changes that affect machine or operator behavior should trigger agreed notice and revalidation when we maintain the system.

Do you support on-prem, private cloud, or air-gapped environments?

Yes. Industrial and research buyers often require VPC isolation, on-prem, or air-gapped designs. We scope network, update, and monitoring constraints honestly rather than forcing a public SaaS path.

What does a first engagement usually look like?

Discovery of cells or instruments, control and data boundaries, and success criteria, then a feasibility or pilot slice that proves interfaces and operability before wider rollout. Longer R&D partnerships are available when the program spans multiple research cycles. See Research & Development.

What proof do you have in robotics-adjacent R&D?

NerveRepack is our published neural interface R&D case for bidirectional interfaces supporting prostheses and exoskeletons. Read the NerveRepack case study. Use only approved cases on this page. Do not invent uptime percentages, cycle-time KPIs, or certifications.

How should we compare Areusdev to a robotics platform vendor?

Ask who owns the runtime and data, whether your data trains shared models, how safety-critical paths stay separate from advisory AI, and how you reproduce a release six months later. Areusdev partners on custom software and R&D under your governance. A packaged robot or WMS product with its own support contract is a different purchase.
