RoADN Genetic testing platform

How Areusdev built Romania's first genetic database

Romania's first genetic database, laboratory system, and customer portal
RoADN is a direct-to-consumer genetic testing service in Romania. People order a test, send a saliva sample, and read a personal genetic profile online. Through this EU-financed project, Areusdev built Romania's first genetic database, and the software around it: the laboratory information system, the analysis workflows, and the secure portal. Genetic Lab was the laboratory partner.

Key facts

01
Areusdev built Romania's first genetic database through the EU-financed RoADN project.
02
The database is in use and holds 50,000 genetic records.
03
Together with Genetic Lab, Areusdev certified the Iași laboratory with the competent Romanian institutions. The laboratory holds ISO 13485 and ISO 27001.
04
The service covers ancestry comparison and selected predisposition information. It is not a diagnosis.

The challenge

Romania did not have its own genetic database. A direct-to-consumer test still needs the sample, the lab, the profile, and the person who ordered it to stay tied together: order a kit, track the sample, store the profile, run the comparisons, and show each person only their own results.
The EU-financed project set that up as a national service. Reports cover similarity to the Romanian population, similarity at global level, and predisposition signals such as thrombophilia and lactose intolerance. Genetic Lab ran the laboratory analysis. Areusdev built the database and the software that carries the rest.

What Areusdev built

Areusdev developed the technical side of the platform, including the laboratory information system and the genetic database analysis.

Romania's first genetic database

Areusdev built it through this EU-financed project. It holds the genetic records used for comparison, including ancestral origin for the Romanian population and a global reference. The database is live and currently holds 50,000 genetic records.

Laboratory information system

The system tracks a test from order to result. Each kit has a unique identifier. That identifier is how a customer reaches their own report, and how the lab result is filed against the right order. Staff can see status without exposing one person's data to another.

Analysis workflows

The software runs the comparisons the service publishes: genetic similarity with the Romanian population, genetic similarity at global level, and the predisposition set named by the project, thrombophilia and lactose intolerance. Areusdev built that pipeline. Genetic Lab produced the laboratory result that feeds it. The page a customer reads is an educational report, not a clinical diagnosis.

Secure portal

Customers order a test and open their own results in a web portal. Access is tied to the kit identifier.

Iași laboratory

Together with Genetic Lab, Areusdev certified the Iași laboratory with the competent Romanian institutions. The laboratory holds ISO 13485 and ISO 27001. Areusdev does not interpret a result as medical advice. Where a clinician is involved, that role stays with the customer and their clinician.

Project context

The public project name is "Platformă web pentru realizarea profilelor genetice – RoADN". It was delivered by the consortium Areus Technology and Genetic Lab, cofinanced by the European Regional Development Fund through the Competitiveness Operational Programme 2014-2020, Priority Axis 2. The financing contract published with the completion notice is 50 / 221_ap2 / 26.06.2020. The consortium announced completion in June 2023.
The completion notice states that testing and sequencing were offered free of charge for 5,000 people to start the database. The database has since grown. Areusdev's current figure is 50,000 genetic records.
Later stages described on roadn.ro, including a wider disease panel and an international version, are plans on the project site. This page does not present them as delivered.
